Kitchen Help Needed.....

For some reason, which shall remain unknown to me...this post will be
centered...
I have asked as nicely as I know how to ALIGN LEFT!!
However, not gonna happen!!
SO, moving on...

These are some pictures of my kitchen....

My kitchen is not big....at all...BUT it is big enough...however,
I have oak cabinets and ugly off white countertops....

I like oak, I respect wood....

But I think if I painted the cabinets it would lighten and brighten the kitchen...
giving the illusion of space...if you will...

I am thinking about painting the cabinets an almond with a mocha glaze...
Paint the existing hardware on the cabinets oil rubbed bronze...

Change the countertops to something darker, something that will contrast with the cabinets...

There's Sissie in her "spot"...

I like the color of the walls in my kitchen...

So....what do you think?

Good idea?  Bad Idea?   Alternate Suggestions?

Lay it on me....

Seriously....

Now, I am not one of those people who LOVES to paint....

that would not be me...

I HATE to paint...I force myself to paint.....

I have put this off for a looooong time.....but I think I am ready...

On another note...

These are a few photos of the SNOWSTORM we got last Thursday....

A dusting.....schools were closed for two days....really....they were

Steve and I painted our house a couple of summers ago...

I did not have fun!!

I'm just sayin'

The snow was pretty...

I was COLD....single digit temperatures...

We are NOT used to that down here in the South...

Our blood is much thinner I think...

It's gone now....just a memory...

First snow we've had in YEARS...

Anyhoo, back to the kitchen...Let me know what you think..

I'm all ears...

  1. I like your ideas for your kitchen. I was reading the current things that are on their way out and if you are into trends it sounds like the glaze cabinets are going to be a dated look along with the rubbed bronze. I just about cried when I saw that!! I love both - never have been into trends but if you are planning on selling your home within a few years you may want to think about it. I think it was Rhoda's blog that had the list of dated looks if you would like to read it.

Your kitchen really is lovely and will be beautiful however you choose!

  2. Well, since you asked! I still like the faux painted cabinets, but I think it is somewhat dated or soon to be. Also, almond might make your white appliances look too white. You don't want to change appliances I assume. My first idea is to paint the cabinets a sage green and then your white countertop could stay, or you could replace with white carrera marble. You would have to paint the walls another color though, like almond! Trying to save your from gutting.

  3. I painted my kitchen cabinet a few years ago and really loved them in the beginning because they made the room seem much lighter. However now I find them awfully hard to keep clean and they weren't nearly as nice as the cabinets you have. I'd think long and hard about painting them if I were you. Good luck!

  4. I have glazed sooooooooooo many cabinets in my 15 years of decorative painting!!!
I have to admit that I still love the look that you want. I painted my own cabinets solid cream with only the edges distressed. It looks fresher than the glazed look to me, but like I said, I still love the look of glazed...done correctly of course. (I have seen some BAD stuff!!!!)
About oak - it is a soft wood with an open grain. The glaze will most likely reveal the grain through the paint.
I would be glad to send photos and help you through it, if you decide to go for it.

Your house is so pretty in the BIG snow!!! Ha! At least ya'll got a dusting. All we got here was a tiny amount of icy rain!

  5. I think you got some great ideas for your kitchen. My cabinets are somewhat similar and hubby just doesn't like the idea of painting over oak. Good Luck! Cindy

  6. Go for it LouCinda! I painted my kitchen cabinets cream, last year. And I am so glad that I did. I swear my kitchen looks 5 feet wider now. It's so much brighter, fresher. I think you will feel the same way. I love your wall color, love your black pieces, and your 'almond' cabinets would be a perfect compliment. I see the other comments about the glaze finish becoming dated... here's what I say... The only person you need to please with this - is yourself. Who cares about trends? Not me.

  7. I think painting the cabinets will be nice, but maybe a little deeper color, the almond with with appliances and floor might be too washed out. You could try one right near the stove and see how you feel. The kitchen is pretty and cozy...good luck.

  8. I have those same oak cabinets, Lou Cinda! If it wasn't for the fact that we are supposed to be selling, I'd be considering the same thing you are. I do like the cream or white with the glazed look myself. Personally, I don't care what the trends say ~ I put in what I like {since I'm living there}. I think you've gotten some good suggestions so far.

I'm sure you've done this already, but have you looked through those blogs where people have shared their kitchens? Lots of great inspiration and they probably tell you how they did it, too.

  9. I think your glazed cabinets would be beautiful. The only thing that would keep me from doing that would be my fear that it might be too trendy. Who knows how long glazed cabinets will stay in style or if they will go out in the next few years. I guess I'm just a traditionalist down to my core; however, I do love the look of glazed cabinets. I say, if you like the look and you don't think you'd get tired of it, then go ahead and do it! I think we need to surround ourselves with the things that make us happiest anyway, don't you?

As for the snow, it's beautiful! I live in north Alabama, and we also got a dusting and schools were closed for two days. I'm ready for a bit warmer days.

  10. I really like the plan you have for the kitchen, it will go very well with the wall color! Your house is so pretty with the snow around it.

  11. Love your ideas. I signed up as a follower BECAUSE I have this exact kitchen cabinets and I am just bored with mine as well. They look beautiful in your kitchen, though. It sounds like a wonderful re-do!

  13. I think it's a great idea, but I would do dread all the work. I'm so glad the previous owners of my house already painted the cabinets white so I didn't have to! I have been thinking about glazing mine too to take off the starkness of the white. I'm excited to see what you decide to do. I know it will be worth the hard work!

  15. I'm with you. I have oak as well. I respect oak but certainly don't love it. Mr. P on the other hand is an oak lover, now you know why I have oak cabinets...lol.. I would love to paint mine and then glaze them. The man would have a "cow"..lol.. can't afford any more upsets from him, so for the time being I'm stuck with oak. If you paint yours, your appliances are truly going to stand out.. are you wanting to change those as well??? You might want to try some treatments on poster board and tape them to your cabinet fronts and live with those for awhile before you jump in.. Keep us posted darling... hugs ~lynne~

  16. I say go for it! I don't know anything about glazing but I'm guessing it's a step after painting. Perhaps you could paint and then experiment on the inside of a cabinet to see what look you like the best? Excited to see what you end up doing! I still haven't painted my awful red kitchen yet. I'm waiting for the inspiration to hit. It's not hitting. I hate to paint too!

  17. Lou Cinda, I have been reading all the comments above with interest because I think my kitchen is like what you have described. I tried to do a link but couldn't figure it out, so just go to my blog and go back to Sunday, February 1, 2009, and you will see my kitchen. I have creamy, glazed cabinets, black distressed island, black dishwasher, new stainless ovens (not sure if we had replaced them in the picture), and a white fridge(I would prefer a wooden panel on the door to match the cabinets, but that's $$$). The differences don't bother me, but seem to flow. I had stained raised panel cabinets for 25 years, and for me, I was just sick of them. I wanted cheeriness. We are big do-it-yourselfers, BUT we had these done by a man who does this VERY professionally. We have had them now for about 4 years, and they wear very well. The glazing makes them a little more durable to me than a stark white. I know that some people may say they are trendy, but listen - we do NOT do things when they first come out. We do them when we need to do something, so they may be trendy for some people, but for us, they are new - does that make sense? Hey, I have heard a lot of talk that stainless appliances and granite countertops are being considered trendy. But if you don't have them, and then you get them, then they are new to you! OK, I've been too wordy, but I really have strong feelings here - I LOVE my lighter, cheerful kitchen. I love the clean look of the paint. I noticed your pretty glass cabinet door in one photo - it would look stunning with paint. All right, that's enough, I can't wait to see what you decide. I'll still visit your blog even if you don't paint your cabinets : ) Linda

  18. Lou I think your kitchen looks beautiful as it is...I just hate it when people want to paint over good oak wood...Every where I look people are into the latest trends...Now I have the same cabinets as you and in 1996 I just had my upper cabinets door put glass in them and it helped lighten up my kitchen...I have seen fads come and go girl...I had a mama that was always into the lastest thing in kitchen colors..girl we had Coopertone brown, green, harvest gold. black, almond before she finally when to white....where I have alway stays with white appliances so much eaiser to change out wall color that the expense of appliances....Now I love your Santa what a great gift girl...just beautiful my friend...Hope you have a great day my friend...Hugs and smiles Gl♥ria
