Was He Breathing?

I am so glad that the lazy days of summer are here!! We are fortunate that my friend Jamie (of the tornado warning post fame) and her husband have a place on the lake and we spend most weekends there. It is about 35 minutes from our house.

Now that Cameron drives, I don't really like to be away from home overnight because 1) he might have an accident or hit someone on a motorcycle and 2) he may have a party at the house while I am away! Now Seth, is home and is really good about "police-ing" the place, but still....I worry!

So last weekend we went up to the lake, Cameron worked until 9:00 (he is a lifeguard) then he and two of his friends came up to the lake too! They sat around on the big screened in porch with us laughing and having a good time.

We went to bed and they all slept out there on various and asundry couches, papasan chairs and the like. The next morning Steve got up early to go fishing and I said "check on Cameron". So he trots out on the porch and is gone a few minutes, comes back in and says, "he is asleep in his car."

Cammie Pie has an SUV so he had put the seats down and apparently sacked out in there.

Me: Was he breathing?
Steve: What?
Me: Was he breathing?
Steve: I assume he was breathing.
Me: Did you stand there and watch him until you saw him breath?
Steve: Uh, no.
Me: Good grief!

So, up I hop, trot out to his car, look in, stand there until I see his chest rise and fall and then I go back in, stopping on the porch to make sure Brandon and Dakota were breathing too.

Me: He is breathing.
Steve: Good.
Me: They were all breathing.
Steve: Good to know....I'm goin' fishin'

I am crazy freaky about that. Everyday before I leave for work, Seth and Cam are still asleep and I walk down the hall, open their bedroom doors, make sure they are breathing, then I can go to work. I do NOT know where this comes from. Motherhood? Those deep internal maternal instincts?

My friends don't do this. I do though, everyday...

Have a great day!

  1. Hi Lou Cinda! I did laugh, I'm sorry, while reading your post! Yes, Dear One, I've done this too! My kids are out of the nest now, but I do the same thing with Mr. Precious in bed. Checking on him to make sure he's breathing! LOL
It's just our job, I guess.
Thanks for popping in to see me,
    Shelia :)

  2. Lou Cinda, you want to hear something funny? That has always been Cat Daddy's job. He has always gotten up for his 2am feeding, so he would check in on the kids. He still frets if he knows they are out on the roads late (and they are 34 and 37). I swear I am going to have sew lace on that man's underwear!!!
(Psst! Don't tell him....I did it to him AND the kids when they didn't know it!)

  3. I haven't actually watched for breathing in awhile.  I do make sure they are there though.  My younger son went out the window once...have to check on him. :)

  4. Wow! I thought tht I was the only one that still did that? I was starting to think that something was wrong with me! lol I sleep better after I see them breathing! LOL

  5. Oh, I check on baby Lucas all the time!!!
I have the baby monitor and I keep looking to see his chest moving... hehehe
I am glad to know I am not the only one!

  6. LouCinda....you are so funny! I haven't done that since my kids were babies, but I have done it to visiting grandies! It's just love : )

  7. This made me laugh...I do this too sometimes! So glad all is well.

Thanks for stopping by my blog, I hope you'll come back soon.

  8. You're funny! Yes, I think I've done that myself a time or two! God Bless! Lauralu :)

  9. Yep, I laughed too because I did that when my kids were young and still at home.

  10. It's definitely a "mom" thing. I just don't think guys get it.

  11. OH I JUST SPIT MY DRINK OUT ONTO MY SCREEN! sleeping in his car. So glad he at least was'home' and you didn't have to wake him up and ask him where the car was? Yes, this happened to a friend of ours back in the day. Not having any progeny I just sit back and repeat the mantra "oh my GAWD I am so glad we opted out of parenthoood...oh my gawd I am so glad we ....

    love ya...ox lulu

    Have a great Thursday.

    Smiles ~ Ramona

  14. I DO IT TOO!!!!! I aggravate the stew out of my kids! I've been known to jerk them up out of a deep sleep because I wasn't sure if they were breathing or not...lol! I'm glad to know that I'm not the only paranoid one!

    Robin :o)

  15. Sweet Lou Cinda...
Thank you so much for the comforting words you left regarding the loss of my beloved Binks. I do miss her terribly.. but do feel comfort from so many like you. I'm truely blessed to have such wonderful friends here in Blogland.

  16. hi!! Thanks for visiting me!!!.....and yes, I was a breather-checker, too, when my children were wee babes.....but, they have (all but one) flown the nest....now i just ckeck on my motorcycle man...when he stops snoring, I wake up...weird, huh???

    Heart Hugs!

  17. Heck Lou, I thought I had commented on this post, and then I see that I did not. Must be the dang prednisone or(Vicoden... nah.)

This is such a sweet post and really hits home. Our 31 year old Travis was here to visit, and I peeked in on him when I got up for water in the middle of the night. I know it's crazy, but being a Mom never goes away no matter how old they are. Now if Trav was married and had a wife in bed with him, it might be a little pathological, but we love those boys and they will know it forever.

Thank you so much for visiting my blog! It means so much to me and please come again :)
