The Cabinet Project

Well, sometime on Saturday I decided I was going to go ahead and paint my kitchen cabinets.  Now, mind you, I have wanted to paint them FOREVER!!  HOWEVER, my friend Jamie, said “OMG!! I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU WANT TO PAINT YOUR OAK CABINETS!!!”

So…I got scared and didn’t do it!  That is how I roll….I want EVERYONE to be on board!  Crazy, I know!!

So every time I have seen a kitchen cabinet reveal in the blog world, I would think, I wish I could paint my cabinets…then last week when I saw Ruth’s cabinets at
The Beautiful Life, I decided I was going to do it!!  Ruth gave me tips and suggestions AND encouragement, so I just made up my mind right there like a big girl!!  I mean, they are MY cabinets and Steve was totally on board.  SO!!!  IT.WAS.ON!

Went to Home Depot and got Behr Premium Plus Paint and it is THE BOMB!  Two coats is all it took!  The color is Oyster..

Before…oak cabinets…nice, but not me…

101_0865

ALOT of doors….

101_0866

I did have to take the doors off, which I was hoping I would not have to do, but my hinges are hidden and I couldn’t paint behind them unless I took them off…bummer…so OFF they came…

101_0868

The ATFER…as you can see over on the left, I ain’t done yet!  I still have five MORE doors to paint!

101_0874

I really do LOVE it!!  I am pondering wiping a stain on….or not….  We are getting new countertops and I am leaning towards a black granite looking laminate that I found at Home Depot…

101_0873

101_0870

Steve turned the panel on the dishwasher around to the black side. (Insert Darth Vader voice here)

I also spray painted all the knobs and handles oil rubbed bronze.  That part was REALLY easy!

101_0869

Rhonda at Blue Creek Home also gave me great advice, encouragement and COURAGE!!  She even sent me some photos of cabinets she has done, which were gorgeous!! Because, I was thinking, what if I do this, and DON’T like it??

But I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!

What do you think??  Glaze, no glaze?  Leave it alone? Or not???

I will say that I started painting these hummers at about 1:00 ish on Sunday and at 11:00 p.m. I was washing out my brushes and hobbling to bed…started back at about 2:00 ish yesterday and at 10:00 I was washing out brushes and I am not done yet!  I was doing it by myself so it took longer, but People, I am OLD and rickety and all that up and down and in the floor and up on the ladder  and bending over the island painting those cabinets….Lord have Mercy!!  I am in some PAIN today…

Steve’s great advice was….get ready for it….

“You need to pace yourself.”  Seriously??? Did he say that?  Pace myself????  I looked at him like he had THREE heads and said, “You know what, I want to get them FINISHED!  And it would have gone ALOT faster if you had helped me!!!”

He looked at me like, well, I never thought about that!

  3. WOW-WOW-WOW!!! That's all I have to say.
Not really-I have lots to say!!!

I love the oyster shade you chose. They looks fabulous! And what a difference painting the knobs make.
Isn't is amazing how much brighter the room seems now? You did a great job!

I know how tired you are, but with Ben-Gay and a few days you will be back to normal and then you just kick back and 'play' in your fresh new kitchen!

Thanks for the mention! I am glad you finally went for it!

    {{don't hurt Steve all at once...pace yourself!!!!}}

  5. They look wonderful and I'm amazed at the pace you set. You are actually the first person who I've heard say anything good about this Behr paint plus primer. I do know that it looks beautiful (and there is certainly no stain color coming through). Congrats on having the courage to DO IT!!!

  6. HAHAHA -- I also wanted you to know that if I had a dollar for every time my husband said the same thing to me, "Pace yourself", I would be very wealthy and would hire the work done AND if I actually did pace myself, NOTHING would be done...haha!!

  8. They look great, Lou Cinda! Look at you with your big girl pants on! : ) I'm still waffling over mine. Rhonda also sent me some pictures, which I have saved to show hubby. I may wait until Fall though when it's a bit cooler out. I think you could go either way, with or without the glaze. I'd like to try the glaze on mine.

  9. ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!!!! I think they're perfect as is....

Thirty years ago I painted my cabinets and I never regretted it. When we remodeled I didn't think twice about new cabinets being off white. They are lacquered actually.

Looks like a whole new kitchen, and I know you will be enjoying it for years to come! (I have white painted cabinets in my kitchen, and I love black appliances with them!)

  11. LouCinda, I left you a lengthy message, but then blogger said there was a problem. I wanted to be sure you knew how beautiful I thought your cabinets are. They look so up to date and elegant! We had our cabinets painted and glazed about 5 years ago and they are holding up wonderfully. We chose glazing because: one, it looks so "Country French", and two, it is very forgiving with knicks, etc. There is no right and wrong...either way is so pretty. Our cabinets are creamy white with a glaze, and our island is black with the edges knocked off and glazed. I love it. I would be VERY tempted to glaze the red island you have. Well, that's my 2 cents and I can't wait to see what you decide! Linda

  12. You go girl!! It looks great and I love the hardware all painted too. I know that is a huge job and I'm proud that you went for it!

  13. Great Job Lou Cinda! I don't think you need to glaze them where the white counter is. But I agree that the red could be glazed if you wanted. Everything looks fabulous!

  15. oHHHHH....I'm so ashamed...I started painting and glazing my cabinets back in Oct....finished one side and have not gotten back to complete. In my defense (yeah, I know that there is no defense when you have two tone kitchen, but let me whine a bit) I am planning to take down the upper cabinets and replace with shelving on the side that is not finished and have not gotten the husband on board yet. For now, I just close my right eye when I go in the kitchen and then all I see is my beautiful creamy, lucious painted side. Yours look great...and good job on FINISHING!!!

I have new cedar french doors , I didnt ask for them to be cedar ,they were always going to be painted white, well my husband & all the tradesmen are mortified that I am going to paint over the cedar. But its got to be done !

  35. Cool beans, Lou Cinda!! The cabinets look so clean and fresh. You now have a new kitchen. I glazed my cabinets 9 years ago and they are only now starting to show some wear. I was contemplating painting them again. Way less expensive than new cabinetry, that's for sure. You did a great job in such a short amount of time, girl!
    hugs, sue

  36. Great job! I want to do the same, but waffle on color. Your cabinets look great with your white appliances. Maybe I should use the same color.

  37. Wow, it looks SO great!! I know you are just loving the change. I always tell people to paint that oak, it's not old oak, so there shouldn't be a big deal about it. and your finished cabinets definitely show the result!! I love them so much. I really think that the glazing is losing it popularity now, so I would tell you to leave them as is, NO glaze. That's my 2 cents.

Thanks for telling me about your cabinets too, great job!

  38. I want to paint my cabinets, too but hubby is having none of it (right now anyway, I'm workin' on it!). We redid our kitchen recently and I wanted to tell you I highly recommend the granite-looking laminate...if it's like mine, I really love it. And, to tell the truth, I'm surprised, I thought dark might drive me nuts, but it's way more forgiving of little crumbs and such than I ever would have imagined! Here's a link to my kitchen reveal and you can see the countertop within the post...

AWESOME job girl! It looks as though you've taken years off of your kitchen :)))
Fabulous if I do say so myself!
So how does your friend Jamie feel about it now??? ;)
I really think this was worth the soreness, don't you think? I bet every time you wake up and walk into your bright kitchen, you sigh a sigh of happiness :)
    Just beautiful!
    (love the red island!!!)
Have a wonderful weekend Lou Cinda!!!

I had dark brown stain cabinets for years, and painted mine 8 years ago. It was worth all the work!! I have enjoyed them ever since.

  43. Lou Cinda,

You did a wonderful job on the cabinets...hard work, huh??? My husband and I refinished our old oak cabinets--bought killed us both, but a LOT cheaper than new ones or even refacing and look just as good. I put a glaze on mine, but I think yours look great now--personal choice.

On another matter--love-love-love your CATS! I have 3 myself--lost my beloved SIMON, my male Siamese. He was my husband's cat (he thought!). Keep sharing ideas with us.

  45. Oh my gosh! I love, love, love them! mine are oak, and I want to paint them so badly! They are relatively new, but I wasn't as wise as I am now. I know I must do it eventually. You are right, seeing them everywhere makes it really hard NOT to do!
    thanks for a little nudge!
You did a great job, and I know when I do mine, I probably won't get them done in two days.
So, two coats of this behr primer plus, that's it? amazing! way to go!

  48. I am so impressed with you. This is amazing, and I love it, love it, LOVE it! GREAT job!

Now, come to my house and lets figure out if I can paint whatever my cabinets are made from! LOL!

I don't know about glaze, but I do like it. There is a photo from a magazine where they glazed painted wood walls in this cool place in Maine, and I loved it. I mean LOVED it. Can you try it on one cabinet and see if you like it??? Then if you don't, you can paint it back the color it was!

    You are GOOD!

    XO,

    Sheila

  50. Lou Cinda, your cabinets look great! I would wait for your countertops to see if you want to stain. They look so great and it really brightened up your kitchen! It cracks me up about the "pace yourself." That is such a man thang! I think my husband says it because he wants a break!

  51. Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous! I can't wait to see the countertops. I have been back and forth with glaze or not on mine as well. I love Behr paint and primer! Your kitchen looks fantastic, plus after all that hard work you can be proud that you did it ALL yourself, tee hee.

  60. Well aren't those gorgeous!! I know it was alot of work but soooo worth it! I did mine a few years ago and it wasn't so easy. They had heavy varnish on them so they had to be sanded first...luckily my husband did that part or I'd a never got done! I think I like the clean white better...maybe just me but I like a 'sterile' kitchen:) (ya, right!!)lol!!

  64. Whew! it's taking since JUNE 1st to get through all the comments--YOU R A ROCK STAR!
love love love the cabinets. I bet you were weary going up and down those ladder steps in your black stilettos! And, your husband and all men suffer from what I have determined is the 'Y' chromosome Factor: as in WHY did you just say that? WHY didn't you help me? WHY are you wearing that?
    YOU get the idea!
you should start a painting business!! LOL xo

  65. I think your cabinets look one hundred times better!!!! The oak was so, well, builderish!! No offense to anyone meant, but the makeover says that a real individual lives here. 72. Beautiful! And your comments about having people scare you off the project initially and then your decision to continue were EXTREMELY encouraging. I've been scared off several times by oak-loving folks. Seeing your kitchen pushed me over the edge today. I'm off to Lowe's this weekend to score the paint and do the deed. Thanks for being brave enough to attempt this AND to share.
